Garlic & Honey Cough Syrup

It's finally getting cold in the Northeast and everyone seems to have a cough so I wanted to share a natural home remedy for cough and congestion. The higher the quality of the ingredients, the more effective it will be. The honey should be raw and unpasteurized. If you have a local farm or farmer's market that sells honey, that will be a good place to find it. The adorable plastic bears that you find in the supermarket are not going to have the antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties that a raw honey will.

Opt for organic garlic if possible. Garlic has been used as a therapeutic health aid for many, many years. It is full of micronutrients like manganese, vitamin c, vitamin B6 and selenium. Garlic has many sulfur containing compounds that fight inflammation, oxidative stress and can improve respiratory function which can come in handy when you are under the weather.

A little warning, you may have garlic breath for a few days while taking this but it is worth it if you are looking for a natural way to fight a cold, flu or infection.

  • 5 organic garlic cloves
  • 1 cup raw honey

  • Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves.
  • Combine chopped garlic and raw honey and place in an airtight jar.
  • You can store it on the counter for a few days or in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
  • Take a tablespoon at the first sign of a sniffle or a cough. Take 1-3 times per day until symptoms resolve.
