Winter Skincare

You know the saying “as goes January, so goes your skin”, right? Well, maybe I got that saying wrong but the truth is, as the colder weather approaches our skin gets drier. Cracked lips, flaking legs and crow’s feet are more pronounced during the colder months. So should we just endure the winter and ride it out? HECK NO!

Dry Air

One of the top skin offenders is the dry heat that comes from the vents in our homes, offices and public spaces. In order to neutralize the effects, we recommend sleeping with a humidifier on low to keep the air in your house moist. This will not only help your skin but your nasal passages as well! Moist nasal passages can help support your immune system if faced with nasty invaders like bacteria and viruses.

Healthy Fats

Finding a moisturizer that works well in winter is a very big deal. Our skincare needs in winter are quite different than our needs in summer. Of course this may depend on where you live but in the colder months, we need an added layer of moisture to protect us from the elements. After trying a lot of products, we found that products containing animal fats like grassfed tallow offer the most natural and effective lipid barrier. I personally use a traditional Russian product made of badger fat that I picked up at my local Russian pharmacy. A more readily available option is Fat Face Skincare products. Essential Oils

Essential oils are...well...essential! Adding a few drops of essential oils like rosemary or peppermint to your daily routine can help lift your spirits, clear your sinuses and will help moisturize your skin naturally. We recommend buying an unscented body wash like Avalon Organics cucumber gluten free shower gel and adding 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil to the bottle.  

Toss the Garbage

Sticking to organic or natural body care products that don’t contain parabens, sulfates or synthetic fragrances or dyes can go a long way in improving the condition of your skin and overall health. Parabens are linked to various forms of cancer and decreased male fertility. If that's not reason enough, they can increase wrinkles and age spots. Hydration & Diet

Finally, the most important way to keep your skin moist and healthy year round is by diet. Consuming a diet high in healthy fats like avocados, coconut oil, organic and raw nuts, wild fish and consciously raised animals will go a long way in keeping your skin supple. Staying well hydrated with lots of water, broth, and herbal teas is key. Remember, beauty comes from the inside out!
